November Programs

Program Chairman Chester Kelley posts the following: November will be "Getting To Know You" Month. Our programming will focus on the activities going on in our new neighborhood.

Wednesday, November 3 - Brian Byrd, regional vice president of Volunteers of America, will be our speaker. Brian oversees all their programs in this region. Volunteers of America is very active in our Rotary neighborhood. Their Communications Director Diane Haag Libro, who I first met when she worked for The Shreveport Times, arranged this for us.

Wednesday, November 10 - The minister of Noel Memorial Methodist Church, Rev. Flint Shea, will speak about their outreach program. Our own Miles Hitchcock made the arrangements and says about Shea, "he is a fine person, great speaker, Eagle Scout and veteran of the U.S. Army, and genuinely believes in the mission work that Noel does."

Wednesday, November 17 - Our speaker will be Sister Sharon Rambin from Schumpert Medical Center who will fill us in on their outreach program. My first contact at Schumpert was Dana Smelser. But the actual confirmation was with Kristen Gary who recently visited with us a guest of Jane's.

Wednesday, November 24 - No program.

Thursday, November 25 - Happy Thanksgiving!!

October 27 Program

This next Wednesday, October 27, at noon, our speaker will be highly respected political pundit Lou Gehrig Burnett who will give us his analysis of the following Tuesday's elections. Lou spent several years in Washington, D.C. as a Congressional staffer (Democrat, by the way), is the editor of his weekly Fax-Net Update and is a columnist for Forum Magazine. This should really be an interesting meeting. So please make plans to come and bring a potential new member with you.
Maybe we can also get him to drop by again before too long after the election to give us a post election report.

Voting in Caddo Parish

Registrar of Voters Ernie Roberson addressed the club January 20 and had good things to say about the staff - all six of them serving over 160,000 voters. It's the lowest ratio of staff to voters in the major Parishes - which means a lot of temporary workers during an election period. Roberson notes that's who most voters encounter when registering, voting early, making changes, and such. Major elections coming in 2010 - August 28 Congressional Primary, October 2 run-offs and the November 2 General Election.

Programs are in process - our favorite Numismatist Richie Self regals the club with his interest du jour on February 17.

Angela Benedetto, clinical research recruiter with the Psychopharmacology Research Clinic at LSUHSC will update the club on the cutting edge clinical trials occurring in Shreveport-Bossier on February 24.
