Rotary Foundation Grant
The Rotary Club of West Shreveport has been awarded a Rotary Foundation grant to provide safe drinking water in the Dominican Republic. The Rotary Foundation is providing $5050, which is a dollar-to-dollar match to the $5000 from District 6190 Designated Funds, plus 50% of the $100 contributed by the Rotary Club of Barahona. This is a total of $10,150 for the water project.
This project will fund 137 cement biosand water filter units to help 137 families have clean water in Barahona, Dominican Republic. The Barahona Rotary Club and West Shreveport Rotarians will be working with the cooperating organization, The Water-Hygiene Project of Albergue Infantil (Children's Shelter) of Jesus Peregrino Episcopal Church. The church operates a free school and meal program. In appreciation of support from the District, the Rotary Club of West Shreveport will make a $1000 donation to the Rotary Foundation.

Huntington High School Interact in Action

Tuesday, November 18 was a bright, sunny, cool and breezy day. Perfect for grilling 250 pieces of chicken for a fund-raiser for the Interact club. Sponsor Kathy Beech and volunteers, prepared carry-out feasts for the 90 pre-paid customers and those planning to drop by during the lunch hour.

LSUHSC Emergency Room – Psychiatric Crisis Unit
Counselor Amanda Harper will address the club September 10. Ms. Harper is a member of a triage team manning the new Psychiatric Crisis Unit – PCU – which provides assessment of persons in crisis who present at the emergency room. The unit opened in June 2007 and has evolved to a 15 bed unit directed by Dr. James Patterson.

September 3, 2008: Audio wizard ROB SMITH will address the club. Rob recently returned to Shreveport/Bossier after a stint in Mesa, Arizona. Rob was in California recently, handling the church audio for the Saddleback Church Forum with candidates Obama & McCain. Rob also does audio for motion pictures produced locally and for years travelled with Billy Graham working the audio for the Crusades.

FULL CIRCLE GREEN


The Huntington High School Interact Club collected an award winning amount of plastic bottles for recycling. The prize? One hundred clear school backpacks made from recycled plastic. West Shreveport Rotary past President Jim Anderson delivered the backpacks to Hillsdale Elementary school. Principal Charlotte Bailey accepted the backpacks.
West Shreveport Rotary previously funded playground equipment for the school and is “adopting” the school as a continuing community service.

Ken Krefft, the President of the Broadmoor Neighborhood Association, will speak at the next meeting of the Rotary Club of West Shreveport at noon, Wednesday, July 9, at Crescent Landing Catfish Restaurant. He will speak about School Safety and, in recognition of the significance of the 4th of July, also give a recitation of the Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address.
Shreveport City Marshal Charlie Caldwell Jr. will speak to the Club on Wednesday, July 16. Marshal Caldwell will discuss the current state of the City Marshal’s office and the upcoming election. This program is part of a series to acquaint club members with candidates for the various offices.

Science & Medicine Academic Research Training Program
Sassy Williams, Coordinator, will speak to the club Wednesday, July 23 about this innovative outreach of the Biomedical Research Foundation, LSU Health Sciences Center, and the Caddo/Bossier Parish School systems. Targeting senior high school students, the partnership seeks those students interested in a science or medical career. S.M.A.R.T. students earn 2 science electives while engaging in hands-on research with mentors from LSUHSC.
This is a rare opportunity for those students with the academic and achievement record to engage in forty hours per week for seven weeks during the summer and ten hours during the school year working with researchers in LSUHSC laboratories.

NEWS FLASH: West Shreveport Rotarian Chester T. Kelley has just qualified as an Independent to run for Congress from the 4th Congressional District.
